can anyone list an honest example of benefits brought the average American citizen by free trade agreements?
I wont accept "cheaper" merchandise as a legitimate answer as "cheaper" is relative to living standards. Declining wages and opportunity are never offset by "cheaper" and inferior choices of merchandise. Real world benefits brought home to Americans as our nation's "leaders" promised from N.A.F.T.A., G.A.T.T., the W.T.O. and normalized trade relations with COMMUNIST China. Make it convincing, you don't want to sound stupid.
It's very difficult to find a substantial benefit to the average consumer other than lower prices and year-round availability. America's unsatiable appetite for low prices will eventually lead to many bad economic, health, and environmental problems. We learned in basic marketing that you should never compete on price...it ultimately doesn't help anyone.
Global competition is good...it incentivizes invention and quality, and keeps the monopolies at bay. Trade imbalance is not good. The trade imbalance with China is causing a monumental accumulation of cargo containers in Los Angeles. If I had to stretch for a benefit to the average American citizen, perhaps these cargo containers can be used to build a stronger border to prevent the massive inflow of illegal workers.
