Cheapest way to simply live in France? ( don't suggest being a hobo )?

I plan to move to France for a while to learn the French language. Being an EU citizen I can live in France indefinitely without a visa, but obviously not have the rights of French citizens. And as I plan to volunteer in a charity shop (to help my learning of the French language), I will not require a work permit.

But back to my original question :] Is there a cheap way to live in France? I will have money with me when I go, but I don't plan to make any money over there (due to hassle of work permits and finding work) so I will simply live on what I have taken with me. Are there very cheap hostels in Paris for example that I can indefinitely live in whilst I am volunteering in France? Or anything similar?

Any help, any help at all, would be much appreciated.

Being a hobo...

Seriously, living in Paris is very expensive. Hotels are not cheap. Maybe you can go on a youth hostel (around 20 euros a night i think). Or you can use couchsurfing. It depends on how long you stay. Maybe you can begin with couchsurfing and someone at your charity job will then help you to find soemthing.

You can also try to find an appartment. It will be hard but I know an american who lived here for 3 months in an appartment. It was "sub-rented" (meaning he payed to someone who payed the rent to the owner).
Every thursday is "jeudi de la colocation". People meet in bars to find a place in a appartmen or people to live with.

it will be easier for you that way. I've met a lot of foreigners living like this.

How much money do you have? How long do you plan to stay? Know that you will need at least 500 euros a month to live here. Personnally i live with around 900 euros.
