Is there any way possible that a senior citizen can get there house rebuilt after a fire for free!?

My grandma's house burned down last night and I am looking for any type of assistance she can get. She is 69, had her house and property paid for, but did not have insurance. Any information about any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm sorry to read that your grandma's house was destroyed by fire. She has my sympathies.

I'm going to assume that you all live in the U.S.: There is likely some help available, depending on where you and your grandma live, but I can't think of any group or agency that always has the funds to rebuild a house for free.

For temporary assistance, contact her local American Red Cross chapter. The Red Cross should be able to help her out temporarily, and can also refer her to other local agencies that can help her out long term. The Red Cross is unlikely to help rebuild her house, but can help her with a short term place to stay while she figures out her next steps.

Another group that can refer your grandmother to programs that might help her is the Local Area Agency on Aging. This agency is operated a bit differently in different locations, and so may go by a different name, but you can use the Eldercare Locator to find the one near your grandma. There may be housing assistance available, but your grandma will need to apply for assistance. There are caseworkers who can help her do this.

Look for local charities who might be able to help. Check with the local United Way for referrals.

Your grandma may need to take out a construction loan or mortgage to rebuild her home. If she does not want to sell her property and move to another home, then it is likely she'll need to borrow the money to rebuild. Check with the Local Area Agency on Aging to see if there are any subsidized or low cost loans for senior citizens. It might help to check with the Legal Aid Society to see if there are is an attorney who will work with her through this process.

You and your family could try to do some fundraising events to help pay for some of the construction. Check with local banks for information about setting up an account to accept donations.
