What To Wear. What Not To Wear

There are rules, sometimes unspoken, for how to look your best on-camera.  Industry experts know about them, but often fail to share them with budding newbies.  Your image is at stake, so you need to take control of how you are transmitted.  Naturally your message is the most important thing, but often one's appearance compromises or distracts from their words; think of Richard Nixon during the 1960 televised debate…

To avoid such fallouts, follow these guidelines:

* Wear a medium colored outfit or suit such as gray, blue or brown.

* Never black or white; white completely blows out an on screen image and black sucks in too much light and tends to weaken your appearance.

* A slightly lighter shirt/blouse in blue, gray or even beige is fine.

* Never, ever, wear a pattern on anything.  If you wear a checkered outfit it will appear as though electricity is coursing through your body! No herringbones, tweeds, or pinstripes either.

* Make sure your suit, shirt/blouse and tie are not shiny.  Under the lights it will appear as though you are wet!

* Avoid anything that is shiny and reflects light, such as tie pins, jumbo earrings and metal framed glasses.

* Avoid silk and polyester which don't breathe and can get hot under bright lights.

* If you are going for a professional look avoid short sleeves.

* If you are trying to transmit the image of a professional who is working hard in the trenches, wear a long sleeve shirt and roll up the sleeves a bit.

* If there isn't someone there to adjust you, make sure you do it yourself! Don't feel bad about taking the time you need.

* If you are wearing a suit hold the back of your jacket down as you sit.  This will ensure the shoulders don't ride up making you look like a football player.

* Smooth everything and make sure you shirt, blouse or jacket is not bunched up.

* Shiny equals sweaty on TV. Bring a compact with a brush and/or oil blotters, just in case the crew doesn't offer.  Even if you are male!  And especially if you are bald or balding.

* It is always best to bring a freshly pressed back up with you, because you never know what could happen while you are taking that last sip of coffee…

Women, here are a few extra tips for you:

* Wear solid colored clothing, ideally pink, brown, purple, and navy blue.  Avoid yellow and red which tend to ‘pop' more than one would like on camera.

* It is always good to have a variety of accessory options with you.  Scarves, shawls, etc. can really enhance your image on camera.  Ask the crew to tell you what looks best in the monitor.

* Make sure your hair is off your face.  There is nothing more distracting than someone who has to keep adjusting their hair or who you are struggling to see under a heap of bangs.

* It is best to wear simple jewelry.  Never wear anything that jingles or clinks.  You may not notice it, but it will be extremely distracting for viewers.

* If you are showing bare arms make sure your face is not darker or it will appear as though you have caked on
foundation.

* Opt for brown make-up tones in your lipstick and blush.  Reds may appear more red than you would like on screen.

* Your eye make-up can be slightly darker than you would wear on a causal day, but don't get carried away!
