Lovaza (formerly Omacor) vs Carlson Super Omega-3 fish oil?
What makes a RX strength fish oil better than a over the counter. The OTC is 1000mg each capsule and I do not know how much the RX is.
Doctors or Pharmacists are prefered to answer. Thanks in advance.
Custard, so both are 1 gram (yes 4 a day for me), is there any difference between the two different brands and the fact one is RX and the other is OTC?

Lovaza comes in 1 g Rx.
Although the recommended dosage for those with hypertriglyceridemia is 4 g/ day.
1 gram tablets (30 tablets) should be around 42 dollars

EDIT: yes, while lovaza is an omega-3-acid ethyl ester it has other active ingredients that are not to be mixed with other drugs. For example, Warfarin bc it can increase the risk of bleeding. the same goes for using this drug with aspririn (although not as dangerous). Also, using beta blockers may antagonize the effects of lovaza. As well as diuretics.
Basically a prescription drug comes with a lot more on the black box warning as does OTC meds that are just advised to be taken as needed and following dosage instructions. I would also let you know that lovaza has some pretty common rxns: back pain, taste changes, flu syndromes, infection, and dyspepsia.
The only caution i know of is the obvious...if you have a hypersensitivity to fish.
there really arent any major warnings with this drug, and if you are trying to decide to take over the counter or the drug i would consult your doctor. i dont know your medical history and i cant make that decision for you, but i hope this info was helpful.
