Star Wars: Republic Commando (*BOOKS*)!!!?
Ok, here's a question for all of you that think Star Wars is awesome. I am currently reading the Republic Commando books, and am on book 3 "True Colours". My question is about who is who and what is what.
I am confused about the different varieties of Commando. I know that the Nulls (Delta and Omega squad) are trained by Walon Vau and Kal Skirata. I also know that the ARC's were trained by Jango. What does Null and ARC stand for/mean. Also, what is the difference. Are there any other types of commando's? And what variety of Commando are Ordo, Meerel, or any of the other clones skirata see's as closer sons than the other clones. What variety are they, and why is their relationship with Skirata so much deeper?
Please dont spoil the book, or leave comments like "Ur such a nerd". Not cool. Thanks to anyone who can clear this up.
The Kaminoans attempted to enhance the Fett genes, but only six of the twelve prototype troopers survived the gestation period. They refused to follow orders, and were thus deemed unacceptable. The Kaminoans originally intended to "recondition" or terminate the "defective units", but they were saved from destruction by Kal Skirata. Kal volunteered to train them as "black ops" commandos, named them, and taught them their Mandalorian heritage. During training, the Nulls were taught to resist interrogation. Though peerlessly efficient, the Null ARCs were quite unpredictable by clone standards, and loyal only to Skirata. Due to their genetic enhancement, they had near-photographic memory, and slightly more muscular physiques.
Despite the fact that their loyalty and their reliability to the Jedi was constantly in question, the Nulls' unique skills compared to the rest of their brethren was undeniable, and thus they and Kal Skirata were reluctantly tolerated in the Grand Army, if only to ensure their cooperation during the war.
The experience of developing Null ARC troopers contributed much in the production of the Alpha-class Advanced Recon Commandos. During the Clone Wars, the Null-class and Alpha-class ARCs harbored a grudge against each other. Whereas the Alpha-class ARCs saw the Nulls as an embarrassment and shame to Jango Fett's legacy of a fully Republic-loyal clone army, the Nulls viewed the Alpha-class ARCs as even more stubborn than Jango and often referred to Alpha-class ARCs as "ordinary" ARC troopers.
Although the Alpha-class ARCs were created with unaltered independent minds just like their Null-class predecessors, these second generation ARCs were more obedient and reliable to the Jedi because Jango had instructed the Alpha-class ARCs to follow their orders. However, this did not stop the ARCs from voicing their disagreements or even their opinion of a Jedi's order that the ARCs saw as incompetent or lacking of enough strategy.
A clone commando, or Republic commando, was an elite soldier of the Grand Army of the Republic. Often working in groups of four, clone commandos were assigned to carry out covert operations too delicate for regular clone troopers. Covert infiltration, sabotage, foreign unit training, and assassination were standard tasks for the clone commandos.
The Kaminoans believed the Alpha ARCs would be just as rogue as the "failed" Null-class ARC troopers, so they proposed another idea. They requested a battalion of elite commandos be created from the regular clone trooper genome template. These clones would be just as loyal and obedient, with the same docility and independence, as their more common brethren. The only differences between the two would be their superior weapons, armor, gear, teamwork and training. The commandos would be placed into squads (nicknamed "pods") of four commandos each, in a reflection of the aiwha hunting pods native to the depths of Kamino.
The standard clone troopers were useful in a group, while the ARC troopers, though they occasionally worked in squads as well, were very capable on their own. The commandos were trained to battle in a four-men squad, but they were described as "formidable" by the Kaminoans, who claimed that "they are the best of the best that the Republic has to offer and were given the best training available, superior to their more common brethren." However, this is in reference the commandos in comparison to the regular clones and is based on the Kaminoans' biased opinion, for they still perceived the ARC troopers as failed experiments which breeded impulsive and irrational clones. Overall, the clone commandos were second best in the Grand Army, superior to regular clones and more independent-minded, but less up-to-par and more obedient than the ARC troopers.
