Why do shiny expensive things amuse men and attract women?

Shiny things... ridiculously sized spinning rims, dangerously fast fuel burning loud cars, Rolex's the price of 5 months of my rent, oh and can't forgot superficial rocks dug from the guts of the rth by African slave labour ( Diamond's are a girls best friend!)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not jealous of these rick folk, I just prefer the simple things in life, like a fuel efficient car that gets me and my pup from A to B i.e From my cheap cosey apartment to the beach to watch the sunset.

I can't understand how people get obsessed with materialistic items so much, that some even go into credit debt.. just to get that new season Gucci fur coat made out of slaughtered animals or to buy a 2009 model car when there other car is still in mint condition.

I know these are 'luxury items' but they just seem like crazy items to me.

Can someone help me understand?
Who are they out to impress? and are they really that happy?

They attract women because they are a sign of socio-economic status, and, traditionally, this is what women were after. They wanted someone who would provide for their family, as this was what the definition of the traditional nuclear family implies. I would hope that things have changed nowadays though...

As far as men are concerned, most of them have an inherent boisterous, "show-off" personality. They are out to impress anyone and everyone, with a special interest towards the fairer gender. It's a little sickening because it creates a standard that we have to live up to, although I would like to think that there is more to life than money and lavish spending. But, I guess that's just the way the brain is programmed with all of the hormones and what not.

Are they really that happy? It depends. Some of them hate their careers but are only in it for the money, so the only way for them to justify their choice and to feel better about themselves after work is to indulge in exalted self-aggrandizement in the form of showing off. I know. I've worked at one of these Wall Street firms. Most of the traders are men. To my own consternation, I used to aspire to become one of them.

Hope that helps.
