How do card shop owners and sellers know a pack of baseball cards is a "hot pack"?

I have noticed that many of the card stores by my house sell hot packs and guarantee an auto or a Swatch Card. How do they know this?

Theoretically, the autograph/swatch cards are thicker. As a result of this, the pack is less likely to bend to pressure on the outside.

Personally, I don't buy modern sports card packs for this very reason.
